Introduction to Screenprinting Weekend Course:
Over the course of 2 days, we can take a person with absolutely no skills in screenprinting, and have them making art, coating screens, burning stencils, setting up a multicolour job, and printing it. We break the process into 8 easy steps, and give each participant lots of hands-on opportunity to learn them.
Advanced Screenprinting Courses:
A good screenprinter is constantly learning, trying to print better, and tackling new challenges. We offer advanced courses that focus on the needs of the students in various areas. These include multicolour printing & registration, printing fine detail/process colour/halftones, printing 3D & challenging materials, quoting & pricing, shop management, teaching and more! Customized courses for small groups our specialty.
Traveling Courses for Advanced or Beginner Levels:
Can't make it to Wachiay Studio on beautiful Vancouver Island? We can bring the course to you. Organize a small group in a studio space and we can work with you to present intro or advanced courses. FAQ - Intro to Screenprinting Weekend Courses -what the?!?
Every month or so we host a small group of people for an 'Intro to Screenprinting' course at Wachiay Studio on Vancouver Island. The course takes place on Saturdays and Sundays from 9:30am-5:00pm. Wachiay Studio is a fully equipped screenprinting shop with one, four, and six colour carousels for textile, dryers and flash cure. We have a number of smaller vacuum tables for graphic printing, along with a parallel lift one arm and small and large semi-automatic presses. Our art room is equipped with Macs running Adobe CS, but we also have rubylith and materials for hand made stencils.
Who is this course for?
Novices: It’s easy to follow and doesn’t require any ‘artistic’ skill. 8 Steps learned the first day gets you printing on the second.
Practicing screenprinters: Fill in the gaps, upgrade knowledge, compare your methods and learn new ones along with up-to-date techniques that will make you more efficient and give you better printing results.
This is all about hands-on learning the basic fundamentals of screenprinting with photostencils. We use waterbased inks, and also take some time to learn the applications and history of our favorite print process. We have a good range of manual and automatic equipment, and can help you if you are planning to upgrade or expand and want to play with different presses and things you might not have in your shop.
INDIVIDUALS or GROUPS – we can custom tailor a course for you. Contact us for more details.
Areas We Will Cover
- Art and Film prep
- Screens – mesh, emulsion, exposure, reclaiming
- Inks -mixing, thinning, additives
- Make Ready and Registration
- Printing Techniques on various materials using different textile and graphic presses
On the first day, participants will go through a ‘cycle’ of screenprinting an image created using a variety of art tools and film types. Screens will be coated, exposed, and reclaimed. A sample run of each design helps the students see the relationships between the various elements of the screen printing process and how they all work together.
During the second half of the 2 day course, students are free to create and print their own simple designs, while practicing the steps learned earlier. With the small class size everyone gets lots of hands-on opportunity, and we make an attempt to accommodate small runs of art prints or textiles, or other materials (glass, silk, ceramics, fabric, wood and leather are just some of the materials we have imaged during our courses – let us know in advance if you have specific applications you want to cover).
We will also work with individuals to give them assistance to keep printing when they are done. We’ll show you how to make simple presses, exposing frames and washout booths to keep going at home or in your own studio. Some people bring samples, and we can dissect problems and offer solutions to a range of issues. Students who are local can also rent our studio for small batch production after they have taken the basics course and demonstrated proficiency on the equipment.
Cost for the Introduction to Screenprinting course is C$300 per person. The price includes materials, and the book Screenprinting Today, the Basics. Two or more people booking the course get $25 off for each additional person. This cost does not include transportation or accommodation, but we can help you find both. We require a $50 non-refundable deposit to hold a place. If the course is cancelled due to low enrollment, you will be refunded or rebooked. Full payment is due 2 weeks prior, unless other arrangements are made.
